Description
Makaton is the Trademark for a communication system that borrows manual signs from British Sign Language (some of them simplified). It is owned by The Makaton Charity, which does not run nor is involved in the creation of this course. However, more than 95% of the signs they use are signs created by the Deaf Community. In the US, people working in the world of SEN use signs borrowed from American Sign Language. It is accepted, it is honored, and no one is trying to register or patent the product of this linguistic community. The aim of this course is to make learning sign language much more accessible. In the same way that somebody saying 'doggie' for dog could not claim to have invented a new language, the signs used in Makaton are essentially signs created by the British Deaf community throughout the years, that sometimes have been simplified. The Makaton system has in additional set of line drawings that are used alongside the signs. It is my view that there are many systems these days (Widgit, Boardmarker, Communication in Print...) that can be used as visual support. These are original creations, and none of them is included in this course. All the signs included in the course are signs created by the UK Deaf Community. The course is priced at the lowest band. You can learn the signs and return the course for a full refund, but I need to charge for my time and efforts putting them together. All the signs represented here are the product of the interaction between a community of humans, the Deaf community. The difference between using sign language and using signs with learners who have communication difficulties lies in the complexity of the utterances. This means, BSL has a very rich and complex grammar, that is different from the grammar of English (grammar is the way that words/signs are put together to convey meanings). When we use signs to communicate with children or adults who have communication difficulties, we can do it alongside English or a visual communication system like Widgit. In those cases, we normally use simple sentences that follow the structure of the spoken language. That is the essential difference between Makaton and Sign Language.
