In this course, we begin to discuss applications of chemical reactions to a very important class of chemistry problems - reactions in aqueous solutions. First, we discuss aqueous solutions and ion concentrations and teach by worked example problems how to calculation ion concentrations in solution.
Next, we introduce the concept of an acid and a base, how to classify acids and bases, and why they are important in chemistry. We discuss how acids and bases react, what they produce, and how to perform calculations for titration problems with acids and bases.
Numerous example problems are worked step by step to give the student practice and confidence with acid-base reactions.
Next, we teach how to predict if a substance will be soluble in water or not based on its chemical formula. This is important for the next topic, which is precipitation reactions. In this type of reaction, the student will predict which of the products will be insoluble and thus form a precipitate. We'll cover net ionic equations for aqueous solutions and give the students many opportunities to practice.
All concepts are taught by fully worked example problems to teach students the most effective methods to solve chemistry problems!
