This module forms part of the full course "Financial Markets: From Basics to Advanced." It is designed to provide learners with a clear and structured foundation in financial assets, financial markets, and financial institutions. Students who find this overview valuable are encouraged to continue with the full course, where each topic is explored in greater depth and applied to more advanced financial concepts.The course begins by defining assets and focuses on financial assets as intangible, legally binding claims on future cash flows. It introduces the fundamental roles of borrowers (issuers) and lenders (investors) and examines key financial instruments such as bonds and stocks, emphasizing their differences in cash-flow structure, risk exposure, maturity, and classification as debt or equity.Building on this foundation, the course introduces essential valuation principles, including the time value of money, asset pricing, expected returns, and major sources of risk such as default (credit) risk, inflation (purchasing power) risk, and foreign exchange risk. Students then explore how financial markets operate to facilitate price discovery, provide liquidity, reduce transaction and information costs, and efficiently allocate capital.The course also examines the role of financial institutions, particularly banks and investment intermediaries, in channeling funds from surplus to deficit units, managing risk, offering investment and advisory services, and supporting the issuance and trading of financial assets.
