Description
This course is specially designed to make the concept of pure substance easy. The course covers the various phases—solid, liquid, and vapour—and the phase transitions such as melting, vaporisation, condensation, and sublimation. Special attention is given to understanding the saturation conditions, where two phases coexist in equilibrium. Learners will study important reference points such as the critical point, triple point, and boiling/freezing points under standard pressure conditions.Lectures include a thorough explanation of the concept of pure substance, PV, PT, TS charts, terminologies used in data handbooks, reading the Mollier chart, and solving numerical problems using the data handbook and Mollier chart. Understanding the concepts mentioned above will enable the application of these concepts to Rankine cycle or steam power plant cycles and their subsequent solution. The course equips students with the skills to evaluate thermodynamic properties such as pressure, temperature, specific volume, enthalpy, and entropy using data tables and Mollier charts. Emphasis is placed on real-world applications in power cycles, refrigeration, and process systems.By the end of this course, students will be able to:Identify and describe different phases of a pure substance.Analyse phase-change processes using property diagrams.Determine thermodynamic properties from tables and charts.Apply the concept of pure substances in basic thermodynamic cycles.
