Reward Management: A Critical Text (Routledge Studies in Employment Relations) By Geoff White
2000 | 240 Pages | ISBN: 0415196817 | PDF | 2 MB
There have been fundamental changes in renumeration practices in the UK over the last quarter century, with a substantial decline in collective bargaining as the major method of pay determination and the growth of more individualistic systems based on employee performance, skills or competency. While these changes have been charted by human resource management writers, consultants and academics, until now the various texts available have been largely descriptive and prescriptive in nature. This new text, which includes chapters by major UK academics and consultants who are specialists in the reward management field, is the first to adopt a critical and theoretical approach to these changes in reward systems. It covers the Institute of Personnel and Development's reward syllabus but, unlike other reward books, takes a thematic and theoretical approach to the material. The major strengths of this book are: * Each chapter is written by a separate reward management specialist with a thorough understanding of their respective subject - be it, for example, grading systems and equal value, financial participation schemes, or international reward management. * Each chapter approaches its subject from a critical perspective and places recent developments in a historical context. This enables the new pay concepts to be subjected to deeper theoretical analysis than has been attempted previously. * Each chapter also reviews the relevant academic literature covering its subject and draws its analysis from a critique of this material. This enables both HR practitioners and those studying reward management, such as IPD, MA Human Resource Management and MBA students, to become acquainted with the range of literature available and alternative approaches to the subject than those found in more prescriptive texts. In this respect, the book is a useful antidote to the 'how to do it' approach adopted by some reward authors. * Each chapter contains examples and case studies or reward practices to illustrate key points and is completely up-to-date in terms of relevant legal requirements, including new areas such as the national minimum wage and the requirement for minimum paid holiday entitlement. The book includes chapters on reward managment and the new employment relationship; grading systems and estimating value; changes in wages systems; salary systems and pay progression; determining pay levels; employee benefits, allowances and tax; financial participation schemes and international reward management.

Revolutionary Brotherhood: Freemasonry and the Transformation of the American Social Order, 1730-1840 (Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture) by Steven C. Bullock
English | January 1, 1996 | ISBN: 0807822825, 080784750X, 9780807899854 | True EPUB | 421 pages | 4.7 MB
In the first comprehensive history of the fraternity known to outsiders primarily for its secrecy and rituals, Steven Bullock traces Freemasonry through its first century in America. He follows the order from its origins in Britain and its introduction into North America in the 1730s to its near-destruction by a massive anti-Masonic movement almost a century later and its subsequent reconfiguration into the brotherhood we know today. With a membership that included Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, Paul Revere, and Andrew Jackson, Freemasonry is fascinating in its own right, but Bullock also places the movement at the center of the transformation of American society and culture from the colonial era to the rise of Jacksonian democracy.

Revisiting Universalism By Alison Assiter
2004 | 224 Pages | ISBN: 0333984528 | PDF | 1 MB
This book begins from the premise that a common nature is shared by all human beings, regardless of social or economic background. The author asserts that significant moral consequences flow from the assumption that all human beings share a common set of natural needs. Using this starting point, the book seeks to defend an objectivist epistemology.

Revisiting Rights: Special Issue (Studies in Law, Politics and Society) (Studies in Law, Politics, and Society) By Austin Sarat
2009 | 248 Pages | ISBN: 1848559305 | PDF | 1 MB
Rights and rights talk have a long and storied history and have occupied a crucial place in the ideology of liberal legalism. With the development of Critical Legal Studies in the 1970s and 80s, rights were subject to extensive critique. Yet not long after that critique rights were rehabilitated by feminists and Critical Race Theorists. Today, scholars are investigating the role of rights in social movements, in legal consciousness, in organizations, in the international arena, etc. This volume of "Studies in Law, Politics, and Society" contains a Special Issue on rights. It brings together the work of leading scholars to think about the nature, utility and limits of rights. This work takes stock of the field, charts its progress and points the way for its future development.

Review of the Environmental Protection Agency's Draft IRIS Assessment of Tetrachloroethylene By Committee to Review EPA's Toxicological Assessment of Tetrachloroethylene, National Research Council
2010 | 186 Pages | ISBN: 0309150949 | PDF | 1 MB
Tetrachloroethylene is a volatile, chlorinated organic hydrocarbon that is widely used as a solvent in the dry-cleaning and textile-processing industries and as an agent for degreasing metal parts. It is an environmental contaminant that has been detected in the air, groundwater, surface waters, and soil. In June 2008, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency released its draft Toxicological Review of Tetrachloroethylene (Perchloroethylene) (CAS No. 127-18-4) in Support of Summary Information on the Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS). The draft IRIS assessment provides quantitative estimates of cancer and noncancer effects of exposure to tetrachloreothylene, which will be used to establish airquality and water-quality standards to protect public health and to set cleanup standards for hazardous waste sites. At the request of EPA, the National Research Council conducted an independent scientific review of the draft IRIS assessment of tetrachloroethylene from toxicologic, epidemiologic, and human clinical perspectives. The resulting book evaluates the adequacy of the EPA assessment, the data and methods used for deriving the noncancer values for inhalation and oral exposures and the oral and inhalation cancer unit risks posed by tetrachloroethylene; evaluates whether the key studies underlying the draft IRIS assessment are of requisite quality, reliability, and relevance to support the derivation of the reference values and cancer risks; evaluates whether the uncertainties in EPA's risk assessment were adequately described and, where possible, quantified; and identifies research that could reduce the uncertainty in the current understanding of human health effects associated with tetrachloroethylene exposure.

Revenge of the Liar: New Essays on the Paradox By JC Beall
2008 | 296 Pages | ISBN: 019923390X | PDF | 2 MB
The Liar paradox raises foundational questions about logic, language, and truth (and semantic notions in general). A simple Liar sentence like 'This sentence is false' appears to be both true and false if it is either true or false. For if the sentence is true, then what it says is the case; but what it says is that it is false, hence it must be false. On the other hand, if the statement is false, then it is true, since it says (only) that it is false. How, then, should we classify Liar sentences? Are they true or false? A natural suggestion would be that Liars are neither true nor false; that is, they fall into a category beyond truth and falsity. This solution might resolve the initial problem, but it beckons the Liar's revenge. A sentence that says of itself only that it is false or beyond truth and falsity will, in effect, bring back the initial problem. The Liar's revenge is a witness to the hydra-like nature of Liars: in dealing with one Liar you often bring about another. JC Beall presents fourteen new essays and an extensive introduction, which examine the nature of the Liar paradox and its resistance to any attempt to solve it. Written by some of the world's leading experts in the field, the papers in this volume will be an important resource for those working in truth studies, philosophical logic, and philosophy of language, as well as those with an interest in formal semantics and metaphysics.
